Tuition-Free Certified Nursing Assistant Training Program At Westminster Place Campus

Evanston, IL – May 22, 2007 --In response to ongoing demands for qualified healthcare workers, Presbyterian Homes is sponsoring a nine-week, tuition-free Basic Nurse Aide Training Program beginning Monday, June 18, 2007. Graduates who pass a state competency test given by the Illinois Department of Public Health become Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs). In the private sector, a CNA training course would cost between $400 and $600.
 
Participants in the CNA training class:
·        Must be at least 18 years of age
·        Must attend a Monday, June 11 orientation class and interview to be held in Elliott Hall, and
·        Pass a reading comprehension test. 
 
The nine-week course runs until August 17:
·        Course will be held Monday through Friday at the Westminster Place Campus, a continuing care retirement community, at 3200 Grant Street Drive in Evanston.
·        Classroom days will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
·        Clinical days or “hands on” training is scheduled from 7:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Clinical days take place at The McGaw Care Center at Westminster Place and allow the students to apply what they have learned.
 
Though tuition is free, there are associated fees of $115 and a $50 fee in the form of a money order required by The Illinois Department of Public Health to take the competency exam for certification and due the final week of class. CNAs are employed by hospitals, long-term care facilities (nursing homes), home health agencies and by families for in-home care. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, an additional 874,000 paraprofessional, direct care workers will be needed by the year 2010.
