Peter S. Mulvey

President and Chief Executive Officer

Peter S. Mulvey is president and chief executive officer of Presbyterian Homes, a not-for-profit organization with a national reputation for creating extraordinary communities for older adults for more than 100 years.

Mulvey joined Presbyterian Homes in July of 1982 as executive director and chief operating officer and was appointed to his current position in April 1986. Before joining Presbyterian Homes, he held several administrative positions at Wellborn Baptist Hospital, Evansville, Indiana, from 1973 to 1982. Mulvey completed his undergraduate studies at Villanova University in 1969 and received a master’s degree in health care administration from George Washington University in 1974.

Mulvey has spearheaded numerous expansions and improvements to Presbyterian Homes. Several projects took place at the Westminster Place campus in Evanston. Mulvey’s vision led to the creation of McGaw Care Center and The Frank B. Foster Pavilion. McGaw Care Center provides short- or long-term nursing care, respite and rehabilitation. Foster Pavilion is a sensitive environment specifically designed to meet the needs of residents with Alzheimer’s disease and those who need memory care.

Mulvey also directed the renovation of Geneva Place, a building originally constructed in 1922, into The Highlands of Evanston, an assisted living residence. A project he names as a career highlight is the building of the Kimball Fitness and Therapeutic Center in 1994, a first of its kind for retirement communities in the area. The two-story, 25,000-sq.-ft. center offers a full complement of exercise equipment, a warm-water pool and lap pool, which are accessible by ramp and hydraulic lift. Professional fitness staff provides equipment supervision and land- and water-based exercise classes.

Another benchmark was the establishment in 1998 of Lake Forest Place, a continuing care retirement community on 49 wooded acres in Lake Forest, Illinois. Soon after, Mulvey led Presbyterian Homes to acquire The Moorings of Arlington Heights from Advocate Health Care System. The Moorings is a gated on 45 acres of what had been the historic Magnus Farm.

Mulvey is particularly passionate about Presbyterian Homes’ benevolent mission, which includes the development and growth of the Neighborhood Homes. Located in Chicago, Crowder Place and Lake View Place provide affordable housing for 80 seniors with limited financial resources.

Mulvey is praised as an outstanding administrator and executive who is a great listener. Characteristically, Mulvey is quick to give high praise and credit to his administrative team in all departments and to the board of directors. “I have had great teams over the years. You don’t do this by yourself. It’s just an excellent staff and board.”

When asked what he would like his legacy to be, he answered, “Quality at every level. We’ve always wanted quality places for residents to live and to serve more residents, but in a quality way.”
