Senior rehabilitation services in the Chicago area
One of life's most challenging experiences is recovering from a stroke, heart attack or orthopedic surgery. The demands are physical, mental and emotional. Often, patients must push themselves beyond their own expectations to regain their independence. And to do this, they need a rehabilitation program that thoroughly understands these challenges, and supports them every step of the way.
Senior rehabilitative services are offered throughout the Chicago suburbs at the McGaw Care Center on the Westminster Place campus, Balmoral Care Center at the Lake Forest Place campus, and at The Moorings Health Center at The Moorings of Arlington Heights campus.
Clinical excellence
Presbyterian Homes is widely recognized as offering one of the most progressive and responsive rehabilitation programs for older adults in the Chicago area. Everything in this program promotes independence.
Patients often come to our health care centers for a short-term stay while they undergo rehabilitation to help them recover from a serious illness or surgery. All patients who enter our program begin with a special plan of care specifically designed to help them meet their goals and needs. Comprehensive senior rehabilitative services include:
- Physical therapy
- Occupational therapy
- Speech-language pathology
Therapy is carried out both at the bedside and in our rehabilitation departments.
Once a patient has completed in-patient therapy, Presbyterian Homes' home health agency can continue to provide ongoing therapy services directly in the home. Our senior therapy team provides continuity and support to help our patients make a smooth and successful transition from our health centers to their homes, and we work to help them achieve the highest levels of independence.
Clinical expertise
All our therapists are Presbyterian Homes employees, and most therapists have earned postgraduate degrees in their fields. They have chosen to specialize in areas important to older adults:
- stroke rehab, with monthly support groups for those affected by stroke
- aquatic therapy in our warm-water therapy pools
- back-strengthening strategies
- low-vision adaptive strategies, with support groups on all campuses
- balance exercises and strength training on equipment designed with the older adult in mind
- lymphedema management
- vestibular rehabilitation
Clinical partnerships
Presbyterian Homes' reputation for clinical excellence in senior rehabilitation has led to a strong partnership with the critical pathway programs of NorthShore University HealthSystem. Our staff is integrally involved with both development and implementation of the programs for total joint replacement and hip fracture rehabilitation.
