Helping low-income older adults stay in
Chicago neighborhoods

Presbyterian Homes, through the Neighborhood Homes Program, is helping low-income older adults to remain in the Chicago neighborhoods they call home — where they shop, worship, and volunteer their time and energy to the communities they love.

Now, in response to ongoing gentrification, the Geneva Foundation has launched a third Neighborhood Home. By offering rent subsidies in a newly renovated and well-maintained apartment building, the program provides affordable housing in West Rogers Park to more than 50 seniors with limited financial resources. Devon Place, a four-story brick building at 1950 West Devon Avenue, includes studio and one-bedroom apartments, as well as 20 two-bedroom residences. With the completion of a major renovation, Devon Place opened in 2009 with attractive landscaping and lobby, plus a well-appointed community room for social gatherings.

Lake View Place (recently renamed Peter Mulvey Place) and Crowder Place, in the Lakeview community, offer hope to 80 older adults in need as development pushes them out of the neighborhoods they’ve lived in all their lives.

Presbyterian Homes’ mission is to provide older adults the opportunity to remain in the communities they know best. In return, the neighborhoods as a whole benefit from the dynamic mix of age, background and experience of its residents. Neighborhood Homes Without Walls Program

Presbyterian Homes has learned through 100 years of experience that community and roots become much more important as individuals age. The Neighborhood Homes Without Walls Program enables lower income older adults to remain independent in their homes through rental subsidies in southern Lake County, Illinois.

Through a partnership with local government, The Neighborhood Homes Without Walls Program helps older adults remain in a familiar community with friends and loved ones nearby, a critical component to their comfort and security.
