A holistic approach to total fitness:
mind, body and soul
At Presbyterian Homes, your emotional, physical and spiritual well-being are at the core of our mission. Your wellness is part of everything we do: the menus developed by a nutritionist, the fitness center classes, the abundance of activities and programs, as well as the attentive support of a community chaplain. By providing excellent health care services as well, we make it easier for you to stay healthy.
Physical wellness
The Kimble Fitness and Therapeutic Center located at Westminster Place in Evanston, is one example — a spectacular recreation center for residents of Westminster Place, Ten Twenty Grove and King Home, and a great place for short-term rehabilitation or long-term wellness. This 25,000 square foot, two-story center is specially designed to promote wellness, fitness and independence among all residents as well as short-term patients at McGaw Care Center.
Innovative support for residents with low vision
Developed by WBEZ Chicago with the help of the Chicago Lighthouse for the Blind, Chicagoland Radio Information Services or ‘CRIS Radio’ is a news reading broadcast channel established for the visually impaired. As part of 2010 wellness programming, The Moorings of Arlington Heights began to distribute free CRIS radios to residents who have low vision. Each radio has only two channels, CRIS and WBEZ. On CRIS, they can hear verbatim reading of the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago Defender and The Daily Herald as well as other local newspapers and magazines.
A powerful rehabilitation tool for Evanston-area seniors
Presbyterian Homes offers one of the most comprehensive
physical therapy programs in the area. When you choose McGaw Care Center for rehabilitation, our physical therapy professionals use the warm water pool as part of your therapy. A total joint replacement program was developed at McGaw in conjunction with two local hospitals to encourage the use of this water therapy. The Kimble Fitness and Therapeutic Center was designed to meet the needs of an older population, and the pool is accessible by ramp and hydraulic lift.
Emotional and spiritual wellness
You have a rich lifetime of emotional and interpersonal abilities. We celebrate these, and we're ready to help you put them to good use in negotiating the opportunities and challenges of older life. Presbyterian Homes' social work staff lends support to residents and their families on a range of issues. Our professional social workers offer a variety of support groups on our campuses, as well as individual counseling, at no charge. Each resident has access to a specific social worker who assists with transitions to the community and can support the family, as requested.
The
Spiritual Life staff is dedicated to providing support and guidance for all residents and their families. Through counseling, study, music and worship programs, chaplains at each of our communities provide support for the life-long faith journeys and major life transitions of all residents and their families.
Our Spiritual Life Program is the hallmark of Presbyterian Homes'
mission: caring for the whole human being regardless of faith, age, health or ability to pay.
Brain health
In addition to physical exercise, Presbyterian Homes encourages residents to take steps to protect their brain cognitive function, awareness and concentration abilities. From time to time, we offer cognitive computer-aided training that takes a different approach to brain fitness. Our residents take an active role in preserving and improving their mental capacity, and they realize significant benefits for everyday life — like keeping visual perception sharp, managing money and numbers more easily, and feeling more confident and in control.
